Is Your Company Ready for Millennials?

According to Deloitte, as of 2025 Millennials will make up 75% of the global workforce. Millennials is the term typically applied to those born between 1980 - 1999. They are the largest age group since the Baby Boomers and it is said that their work style is very different.

Is your company ready to accommodate them? They expect more from their employers than any previous generation including:

FLEXIBILITY

That is what Millennials want. This generation don't value some of the same things as their predecessors such as a job for life or working their way up the career ladder. Millennials want to be able to work from different locations at different hours around their other commitments. They don't want to be judged on how many hours they work but instead the level of the work they produce. This generation are looking to have a level of flexibility in their work in order to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

A Sense of Purpose

Millennials aren't just working for a monthly pay cheque; they want to feel a sense of purpose in what they do. Personal enrichment is an important factor to their working life. One study found that 6 in 10 Millennials said that "a sense of purpose" is part of the reason they chose to work for their current employers. Because of this, Millennials are asking more of their company than might have been the case 50, 20 or even 10 years ago. They want their employers to be ethical and innovative.

Coaching & Training

Unlike previous generations, Millennials don't view their managers as experts. Being tech-savvy and multi taskers who are able to access unlimited information at the click of a button, they instead view managers more as coaches. One company found that since Millennials were raised with constant feedback and coaching they expect this in the workplace. They want to feel valued by senior management and have continuous one-on-ones to discuss opportunities for improvement. This in turn will increase engagement and productivity in the workplace.

Many businesses such as Virgin, Deloitte, Apple and Google are delivering everything this generation asks for through their flexible work policies and training programmes.
