Chertsey, a medieval town in Surrey, is one of the oldest towns in England, having developed around Chertsey Abbey which was founded in 666. Until the mid-19th century, Chertsey remained a strongly rural community dependent on agriculture, market gardening and a long-established tradition of tile- and brick-making.
Chertsey today is an attractive, prosperous town that has managed to combine its traditional architecture with a wide range of modern facilities. Its historic centre has been sympathetically redeveloped to incorporate many changes and improvements without losing its identity. Indeed, it boasts some of the best preserved Georgian architecture in Surrey.
